Q. After hearing three booms around 3 a.m. April 13, I went outside and heard an explosion. A truck behind a vacant house on park ave had caught on fire and exploded. Can you give me any more info on what happened? Was anyone hurt? The truck was gone by 11 a.m.

A. There was a car fire on Park Avenue at that time, according to the Wilmington Fire Department.

The fire was intentionally set and is being investigated as a criminal case, according to Sammy Flowers, a WFD spokesman. It is being investigated by the Wilmington Police Department’s detective division.

Often when vehicles catch fire, there are loud noises and small explosions as tires blow, drive shafts explode and gas tanks melt away, according to Flowers.

“All of these examples are sometimes very loud and could be considered an explosion,” he wrote.

In the case of the Park Avenue fire, the car was “well involved” when crews arrived on the scene.

After the fire was put out, the car was towed to a secure place for the ongoing investigation, said David Hines, a WFD spokesman.
