Q. Why did the DOT cut about a yard-wide swath of road across all lanes of 74/76 in Brunswick County? They happen about every 300 yards and are often too close together.
A. Wayne Currie, Department of Transportation resident engineer, said that if the cuts in the roadway are in the vicinity of the Wilmington Bypass, “it is probably new storm drain pipes beneath the road.”
“That is about the only reason I can think of that there would be a cut in the pavement across the entire road,” Currie said.
Currie later got back to us with some more information:
“As part of the Wilmington Bypass Project there is some work underway on US 74/76 from east of Entrerprise Drive to east Malmo Loop Road west of Leland,” he said. “The contractor has installed new drain pipe in both the east and westbound lanes. To accomplish the work the pavement was open cut, new pipes were laid and patched with asphalt each night.
“Prior to completion of work in the vicinity of the bypass, US 74/76 will be resurfaced and these patches should not be noticeable.”
