Q. Where is Brian Berger? He seems to be missing in action and not fulfilling his duties as a commissioner. Is he still being paid even though he is not doing his job?

A. The last full board of commissioners’ meeting Berger attended was on Nov. 18. He arrived at 10:35 a.m. for the 9 a.m. meeting, according to meeting minutes kept by the county. He attended an agenda review on Dec. 5, but missed all but the last 10 minutes of that meeting.

Despite his lack of attendance, Berger is still paid by the county. New Hanover does not tie commissioner pay to attendance or participation. He receives a salary of $16,446 annually, as well as a laptop and a cell phone stipend. He is also eligible for standard county benefits, including health insurance.

The commissioners would have to vote to establish a new pay system for the board if they want this to change. Pay would have to be on a per meeting basis. There has been no discussion of changing the commissioner pay schedule.
