Q. Why is it that I can buy a StarNews newspaper from a machine for 50 cents but it’s 53 cents in the store? Because sales tax is added?
A. Last year, the General Assembly passed an overhaul of state tax regulations that took effect on Jan. 1. As part of that package, newspapers are now subject to a 7 percent sales tax.
As a convenience to readers (who may not carry a pocket full of pennies), the StarNews and StarNews independent contractors have not added that 3 cent tax to the 50-cent price charged in newspaper racks.
