Q. I recently saw a website that was talking about the possibility of CFCC getting a football team. Has there been any official word or any talk from the college of this happening? Here is the website: http://trevnc.tripod.com/id8.html
A. Cape Fear Community College is not interested in adding football at this time, according to its athletic director, Robby McGee.
Junior college football is popular in the Midwest, Texas and Florida but not as much in this area. Louisburg College (N.C.) is the only school that sponsors football in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Region X, which encompasses West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
CFCC currently sponsors six sports – men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf and women’s volleyball. Adding football would likely require new facilities and the addition of several other women’s sports teams to satisfy federal Title IX regulations regarding gender equality.
