According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jerry Brewer, you don’t have to register your handgun in North Carolina. But if you wish to purchase a pistol you have to have a Pistol Purchase Permit. Both Pistol Purchase Permit and Carry Concealed Weapon applications can be picked up in person at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office or downloaded from their website at www.newhanoversheriff.com.
