Why do new signs on U.S. 17 indicate 140 is a state road and not an interstate highway?

Ken Little

Q. Why are the new signs on U.S. 17 at the new I-140 Bypass not marked Interstate 140? The signs designate the new road as N.C. 140, not Interstate 140.

A. “We are unable to moniker the new section of the Wilmington Bypass as I-140 until it is continuous of the existing section of I-140 from I-40 to U.S. 421,” said Katherine Hite, N.C. Department of Transportation Division 3 traffic engineer.

Hite said the new section will be named N.C. 140 “until such time the Wilmington Bypass is complete and it can be named I-140 from I-40 to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County.”

What is the holdup on opening the second phase of I-140 in Brunswick County?

Where can I find a map showing how I-140 ends at U.S. 17 near Winnabow?
