Since the animal shelter operations were turned over to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department in 2012, Sheriff Ed McMahon has the final say in the hours the shelter is open for adoptions and other services.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Shelter, located at 180 Division Drive, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Adoption hours are 12 noon to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
“Sheriff McMahon initiated the Saturday (hours) and there’s been a couple of times we’ve actually run out of cats and dogs to adopt,” said Sgt. Jerry Brewer, the public information officer for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department. “It’s been monumentally successful.”
