Q. Is there a charter law in UNCW by-laws and land grant that does not allow football as an NCAA sport at UNCW. I have heard this rumor for many years.
A. UNCW can start a football program if it likes. But the school isn’t starting one anytime soon.
UNCW sports information director Joe Browning notes there is no bylaw that says the Seahawks can’t field a football team. But the school has no intentions of creating a program from scratch in the foreseeable future.
There is, however, a Facebook group titled “Football Program at UNCW.” It has more than 1,000 members currently.
