White isn’t taking classes at UNC in the spring semester, though the Hoggard High School graduate hopes to eventually return to school and suit up again for the Tar Heels, according to high school coach Brett Queen.
White, the 2010-2011 StarNews Player of the Year, was forced into starting duty in the postseason as a freshman at UNC but left after one season to go on a two-year Mormon mission to Utah. He returned to Wilmington in late December, cutting the mission a few months short after he suffered an ankle injury.
Queen said White plans to spend the next few months in town, rehabilitating the ankle and working back into basketball shape. He could enroll at UNC as soon as the first summer session, which begins May 13. White declined comment through Queen.
UNC coach Roy Williams addressed the situation after his team beat UNCW in Chapel Hill on Dec. 31. He told reporters the Tar Heels don’t currently have a scholarship available for White but would like him to return.
“I love Stilman to death and feel that eventually he’ll be back as part of our basketball team,” Williams said.
