Q. I have heard the story of a bulldozer actually buried underneath College Road at New Centre Drive. When College Road was widened to the four lanes, during the work of digging out the bad soil, supposedly a large dozer got stuck in the mud. It was so old and so expensive to remove it was buried there. Is this true?
A. Urban legends abound. This could be one of them.
No one at the Wilmington N.C. Department of Transportation office could locate supporting records or has any memory of such an event, which would have happened many years ago when College Road was widened to four lanes.
“There isn’t anyone in our local office that has any knowledge of this. Since College Road was widened some time ago, most employees that would have been involved with this project have either retired or left N.C. DOT,” said Katie Hite, Division 3 traffic engineer.
Newspaper archival records shed no light on the supposed incident.
Joseph Sheppard, a library associate and local history expert who works in the North Carolina Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, could not confirm the story.
“Unsure, but it might have happened. In the good ol’ days, construction equipment, dead horses and fallen soldiers were often left where they fell,” Sheppard said.
If anyone can dig up any facts on this curious rumor, let us know in the Comments section below.
