Why did the DOT install cameras on poles between the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and Leland?

Q. Why did the DOT install those tall poles with what look like cameras along the 17/74/76 causeway between the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and the Leland exit?

A. The N.C. Department of Transportation recently installed the poles for the installation of closed circuit televisions, or CCTVs, “which are the same type of cameras used by the city of Wilmington to monitor traffic,” said Jessi Booker, NCDOT Division 3 deputy traffic engineer.

“All of the hardware is installed and we are currently working on getting everything set up for the public to be able to view these cameras as well. These were installed so that the public would have access to these for the upcoming transportation improvement project (TIP) along this route,” Booker said.

Here is the website where these cameras will be available:

DOT plans for the camera feeds to be online by the end of December.
