Q. Does ATMC have any plans for upgrading their internet, cable and phone services? No competition is available in the southern Brunswick County area.
A. ATMC currently offers more than 70 high-definition channels and plans to add more than 50 next year, with the bulk of them in the first quarter, said the co-op’s marketing manager, Jody Heustess.
It also plans to enhance its video-on-demand service.
For Internet service, “we are going to have by year-end or mid-January the ability to offer up to 50 meg speeds to probably 75 to 80 percent of our customer base,” he said.
Half of the remaining 20 percent or so of customers will have 50 meg availability sometime in the first quarter.
“By the end of the first quarter, we should be able to offer up to 100 meg of Internet to up to 85 percent of our customer base,” he said.
Customers will be able to choose to upgrade their service.
“We have a whole new slate of bundles coming out in January that will allow people to pick and choose services – all three, two services or one,” he said.
Over the past eight months the company has been working to offer broadband cable TV service over coaxial cable to those who only had service by phone, Heustess said.
ATMC’s history began in the mid-1950s, when a cooperative was established to serve areas of Brunswick County that the Bell system would not serve, he said, adding that ATMC covers 70 percent of Brunswick’s land mass but most of it is very rural.
“We rolled out cable TV in Brunswick when no one else wanted to provide it,” he said. “We added wireless service about 10 years ago and put in double the number of wireless towers in Brunswick than any other provider has done.”
In the early 2000s, the company became the “first company around that was deploying fiber optics all the way to the home” in newly built subdivisions, Heustess said.
