New Hanover County did have plans at one time to open an access to Olsen Park from Murrayville Road, according to county spokesperson Charles Smith.
However, those plans fell through after the design phase.
“It was very expensive due to the steep bank at the I-40 overpass, as well as the need for turn lanes, which was why they went with the current access,” Smith said.
The county no longer manages Olsen Park, even though it is located in the unincorporated part of New Hanover. The city of Wilmington manages the park and oversees construction projects there.
City officials did not respond to multiple requests for comment and there is no word as to whether the city is considering opening up an access from Murrayville Road at this time.
