Q. Are there any plans by the county to install lights on any of the soccer fields? Veterans Park just is not enough.
A. Tara Duckworth, New Hanover County’s parks and gardens director, said this is one of the primary requests coming into her office.
“We are planning on adding fields at Castle Hayne (Park) and lighting those,” Duckworth said, noting they will be multipurpose fields very similar to those at Veterans Park.
The design work is nearly completed and construction will begin in the spring. How soon the fields open will depend on how fast the new turf is ready for play. She anticipates this will happen at least by spring 2015, hopefully sooner.
She noted there are lights at the Ogden Park fields and some football and soccer teams practice on baseball outfields, where there are lights.
Does the county need to add even more multipurpose fields, as the population grows and other sports become more popular in the area?
“That’s definitely on our list – lighted, multipurpose fields,” Duckworth said. “That is our biggest demand.
“Those Veterans fields get played pretty much every day of the week. It’s difficult to maintain that turf, with that level of play.”
