Q. How did the land at the Galleria Shopping Center, on Wrightsville Ave near the ABC store, come to be incorporated into the corporate limits of Town of Wrightsville Beach? How far do the corporate limits of Wrightsville Beach extend on the mainland side?

The shuttered Galleria shopping center, which sits on a slice of mainland, was annexed by Wrightsville Beach in 1985 after several meetings of the Board of Aldermen and a public hearing. Aldermen earlier this summer rejected a proposal to de-annex the property. For more information, see the attached documents.

Wrightsville Beach annexed the Galleria site as a satellite annexation in 1985, and subsequently annexed other portions of the mainland.

Click here to read a 1987 StarNews article about that.

“Satellite annexation” is when a municipality takes in a tract that is not contiguous, or attached, to the rest of the town or city.

Here are the minutes of the Board of Aldermen meeting of Feb. 21, 1985, where the satellite annexation of Galleria was discussed, before it was accomplished: Wrightsville Beach town meeting minutes, Feb. 21, 1985
