Q. I am looking for an apartment for my adult daughter, who is developmentally disabled. We have a portable housing voucher from Maryland. The problem is that virtually no apartments take the vouchers. Would you know the name of a downtown apartment building accepting housing vouchers?
A. Your first call should be to the Wilmington Housing Authority. Call 341-7700, ext. 281. The director of housing choice voucher program, Rhonda Mack, will be able to help you.
In some cases, portable vouchers from other states can be accepted if the state agency sends the voucher to WHA.
If a person needs special housing because of a disability, then they might need to call the N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services at (919) 855-3454.
The following link discusses the types of housing available: www.ncdhhs.gov/aging/housing2.htm.
The local disAbility Resource Center might also be of help. You can contact them at (910) 815-6698.
