Why do Jacksonville radio stations have the artist and song on my car’s digital display but none in Wilmington have this?

Mike Voorheis

The stations that include the name of the artist and song have purchased a Radio Data System – equipment that transmits that information.

Chris “Hollywood” Mann, operations manager for the Nextmedia cluster of stations in Jacksonville, New Bern and Greenville, explained that the stations use a device about the size of a Blu-Ray player that sends a signal to the station’s transmitter. The transmitter then broadcasts that information along with the radio signal.

Joyce Thomas, business manager of Cumulus Broadcasting, which operates five radio stations in Wilmington, said the stations haven’t upgraded the equipment, but they might in the future.

Beau Gunn, general manager of Hometown Wilmington Media, said all of its Wilmington stations do have RDS capabilities. The system is most useful for its music stations, 103.7 The Bone and 98.3 The Penguin.

Is Curtis Wright coming back to local radio?

Which radio stations have local morning shows and which ones are broadcast from elsewhere?
