New Hanover County has acquired funding for various roadway improvements in the vicinity of Ogden Elementary School, said Al Edgerton Jr., N.C. Division of Transportation project manager.
The county has hired a private engineering firm that has started the design work, he said.
The work will include the installation of a multi-use path along Middle Sound Loop Road from Red Cedar Road to the existing sidewalk at Ogden Elementary School.
It will also include extending bike lanes along Red Cedar Road to connect to future 8-foot-wide, multi-use path along Middle Sound Loop Road, and the installation of a crosswalk at or near the intersection of Red Cedar Road and Middle Sound Loop Road, Edgerton said.
The project also includes:
- Installation of bike lanes along Covil Farm Road, from Military Cutoff Road to Old Fort Road.
- Installing a multi-use path or sidewalk from the existing sidewalk at Ogden Elementary School to both Kenmore Drive and Oyster Lane.
- Installing on-road bicycle improvements, including bicycle use road marking and signage, along Bright Leaf Road, Humphrey Drive and Wendover Lane.
- Installing a 10-foot, off-road multi-use trail with a pedestrian bridge off of Bright Leaf Road to Thais Trail to make connection with the Bayshore Estates subdivision.
The anticipated letting date will be January 2014, with an anticipated completion date in December 2014, Edgerton said.
