Will the city pick up shredded paper for recycling if it’s put out in clear plastic bags?

Q. The city of Wilmington picks up several different types of recyclable items in my neighborhood, but does not pick up shredded paper in clear plastic bags. I wonder why the city does not pick up shredded paper and wonder if there are any alternate ways for me to recycle shredded paper? I shred a fairly substantial amount of paper in my paper shredding machine and I hate to just throw the paper out in the trash.

A. “We should be picking up shredded paper,” said Dave Bundick, the city’s solid waste superintendent. “That’s definitely something that is recyclable.”

Bundick said the crew may have overlooked the bags or mistaken it for trash. (Extra trash bags that do not fit in the trash carts need stickers to be picked up).

“Our guys should be picking up anything outside as long as we can tell it’s recycling,” Bundick said.

Bundick said he would remind all recycling crews to collect shredded paper. If you are recycling shredded paper, make sure it is in a clear plastic bag so crews can see it is not trash. The plastic bags are not recyclable, so crews will empty the bags into the recycling stream.

If you have recycling questions or your recycling was not picked up, you can call the city directly at 341-7875. You can also call the same number to sign up to receive a recycling cart.

Why is there no recycle bin for paper at the main post office?

My recyclables are all picked up in one truck. Are they really being recycled?
