Q. In the past, I have asked about when are they going to complete the pedestrian island on George Anderson behind Halyburton Park. Well it looks like they have come up with a solution. They completely removed the island after spending thousands of our dollars to install one that they thought was necessary. So now what’s up with that?
A. Two or three years ago, the city installed a pedestrian island on George Anderson Drive northeast of South 17th Street near Halyburton Park.
During the planning stages, adjustments were made to the initial design of the pedestrian island, which resulted in the islands appearing too small in the location, said Don Bennett, the city’s traffic engineer.
After receiving complaints, the city is in the process of replacing the islands so they are in a better visual proportion to the location, Bennett said. The entire project should be wrapped up by early August, Bennett said.
The pedestrian crossing is similar to an island installed on Lake Avenue, between 41st Street and College Road.
