Are the employees of the Wilmington chapter of the American Red Cross unionized. If so, why?

Nearly 40 percent of Wilmington’s American Red Cross employees that work in Blood Services are unionized, according to a Red Cross spokesperson.

The Red Cross has 54 employees based out of Wilmington, part of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region, said Kara Lusk Dudley, communications program manager for the Carolinas Blood Services Region, in an email. They are represented by Teamsters Local Union #391, she added.

“We respect the lawful right of employees to pursue outside representation for the purposes of collective bargaining if they choose,” Dudley said.

The only employees of the group that are unionized are those that work within the biomedical systems, said Bill Brent, regional CEO for the eastern North Carolina Red Cross, adding that those employees function outside his responsibility.

Typically, non-blood staff employees are not unionized, Brent said.
