What were the ships/barges off Carolina Beach in April doing?

The ships offshore in Carolina Beach in April were part of a dredging and renourishment project. That project, which pumped about 900,000 cubic yards of sand onto Pleasure Island, concluded at the end of May.

Why doesn’t the Carolina Beach renourishment project take sand from the boating channel in the inlet?

When will the sand at Wrightsville Beach be leveled off? There is a giant ridge there.
