The Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is responsible for checking gasoline pumps for accurately dispensing fuel in accordance with the Gasoline and Oil Inspection Law.

The division tries to check pumps annually, but it usually takes about a year and a half to check every pump, said Jerry Butler, weights and measures programs manager for the division.

Staffing vacancies and injuries have run up the average time between inspections, Butler said.

In the Wilmington area, one gas station inspector is responsible for all of Onslow, Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick and Columbus counties, Butler said.

Each gas station inspector, of which there are 23, are given 7,000 dispensers to check, on average, Butler said, though some have over 10,000.

“You might see a few 2011 stickers that are around,” Butler said. “If you do, please tell me about it.”
