Q. Titan is proposing a coal-powered plant in New Hanover County. As a compromise, could they put in a natural gas powered plant instead, the thought being there would be fewer bad emissions?
A. Bob Odom, general manager for Carolina Cement LLC, ruled that out in an e-mail statement.
“The air quality permit for the proposed Carolinas Cement plant stipulates the use of coal as the primary fuel source for the cement plant,” Odom said. “Carolinas Cement has no current or future plans to use natural gas as a fuel source.”
Odom said natural gas is not as economically and environmentally viable as coal for a fuel source.
