City officials could not find an answer in their records. Questions to others with knowledge of Wilmington streets also came up blank.
“Speculation is that the buildings blocking the right-of-way may have been in place prior to construction of 41st Street,” city spokesman Dylan Lee said.
Wilmington city maps drawn prior to 1996 show a proposed route connecting South 41st Street between Cherry and Park avenues. The 1996 Wilmington city map does have a connection drawn, said Joseph Sheppard, of the New Hanover County Public Library
“If you see the current map a route looks like it would logically cut through,” Sheppard said.
More information, including statellite images, may be available by reviewing city land use plans, or traffic and transportation studies, on file at the Local History section of the downtown library.
