What are the top 10 salaries of executive directors of the area’s nonprofits (non-governmental)?

Ken Little

Chuck McLean, vice president of research for GuideStar, a company that collects and publicizes information on nonprofit organizations countrywide, provided the following list using 2010 compensation figures, the most recent available and used in the GuideStar 2012 Nonprofit Compensation Report.

The list as of 2010:

1) Mark Darrow, CEO, Health Science Foundation, $393,529.

2) John Gizdic, president, Carolina Healthcare Associates, Inc., $237,559.

3) Robert Jahnes, general manager, Country Club of Landfall, $211,151.

4) John Meehl, headmaster, Cape Fear Academy, $201,244.

5) Lauren Bystrom, CEO, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, $184,915.

6) Kathy Dikeman, executive director, Cape Fear Tutoring, $182,000.

7) Charles Long, executive director, Davis Health Care Center, $172,347.

8) Margaret Weller-Stargell, president/CEO, Coastal Horizons Center, $136,106.

9) Deborah Veldors, executive director, Louise Wells Cameron Art Center, $127,481.

10) Mary Geiss, general manager, Cape Fear Country Club, $126,355.

According to an earlier GuideStar compensation report McLean created using data from 2009, the Wilmington area had 77 nonprofit executives.

“Most of them were CEOs, but there were some CFOs. Twenty-seven of those 77 made more than $100,000,” McLean said in November 2011.

McLean said, however, that the earlier report only contained about half of the public charities due to fact that not all of the organizations had submitted IRS form 990s by time he started his report.

The 2012 report is available at http://www.guidestar.org/rxg/products/nonprofit-compensation-solutions/guidestar-nonprofit-compensation-report.aspx

Jane Kendall, president of the N.C. Center for Nonprofits, a Raleigh-based organization that serves as a resource for nonprofit board members and staff, said in November 2011 that “approximately 10 to 20 nonprofit executive/CEOs in New Hanover County have salaries above $100,000.”

Kendall said that nonprofit organizations compensating their executives at the $100,000-and-above level “tend to be large and complex, with annual budgets of $2 million to more than $10 million.”

Kendall said in 2011 that a study conducted by the center indicates that the average pay for executive directors of nonprofit organizations in Wilmington area is $51,950, below the statewide average at the time of $60,000.

She said various factors determine the salary of nonprofit executives, including overall budget size and the type of background required for each job.

Kendall said this week that the salaries of nonprofit executives in the Wilmington area provided in 2011 were available because the N.C. Center for Nonprofits had just completed “a large study of compensation and benefits for nonprofit staff in 206 different types of positions across the state.”

No new information is available from the center.

Kendall suggested looking up salaries for individual organizations in the Wilmington area by looking at their IRS Form 990s at www.guidestar.org.

How many nonprofit executives in the Wilmington area earn over $100,000?

If a nonprofit group holds a raffle to raise money, is it possible to find out how much of the proceeds go to the charity?
