New Hanover County does not collect the money from churches that use school buildings on Sunday, according to county spokesperson Charles Smith. The money is handled entirely by the New Hanover County School system.
NHCS spokesperson Valita Quattlebaum said that the amount collected by local churches this fiscal year is $22,283.
The district currently has three churches that rent space in schools for their services.
“The income from these property rentals covers both the costs associated with the use of our facilities and it generates revenue for the district,” Quattlebaum said.
