What can you tell me about Byrd family businesses near Fourth and Nixon?

Q. My grandfather owned a restaurant on the Northside of town near Taylor Homes, and my dad owned a barbershop in the same area, near Fourth  and Nixon streets. My dad, James R. Byrd Sr., was nicknamed “Stew,” and his his dad was Joe Nick Byrd. Can you give me any information on their businesses? My father passed in 1965.

A. Two bizes on the Northside up to 1965

The area around Fourth and Nixon streets on the Northside was a thriving community. Several members of the Byrd family had successful businesses there. Joe Nick Byrd owned a neighborhood restaurant and his son James R. “Stew” Byrd Sr. had Byrd’s Barbershop during the late 1950’s to mid-’60’s.

James Byrd Sr. lived at 1211 N. Fourth St until his passing in 1965. Unfortunately we were unable to find much information about about these businesses. The older buildings are gone and the area has been totally redone with the new roads going through there.

If anyone has any information or photographs of the Fourth and Nixon area we would love to hear from you. Let us know in the Comments section below.
