Have there ever been any reports of cryptid creatures such as Bigfoot in New Hanover county?

Gail Calloway

“Cryptid” means a creature or plant whose existence has been suggested but not proven by scientific means. Yeti, Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster, and Big Foot all fall into this group. Actually Southeastern NC has a lot of things that fall in this description, depending on whom you might ask on a Saturday night. But not Big Foot.

According to the “Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization” there has been no reports of or media articles for New Hanover County. The lack of sightings have more than been made up for by reports from the Green Swamp areas of Brunswick and Columbus counties. According to “Weird NC” there have been several sightings in those areas. All these sightings are described as black and brown hairy creatures, 6 to 7 feet tall, weighing around 350 pounds.

A Wilmington newspaper from April 1888 reports two hunters in this area killing a half human, half animal beast.

And of course let us not forget “The Beast of Bladenboro” or “Wampus Kitty,” as older locals call it. Unlike Bigfoot, the Beast was described as panther-like or bear-like. With a killing spree starting in the 1950’s he created a lot of panic and drew national attention to the area. It was said to be responsible for the gruesome killings of many pets and livestock in the late ’50s, but, then in 2007 reports of the same type of killings started again. To this day it has not been caught.

Maybe he scared off any local Big Foots.

Where is the best place in Wilmington to ride out a zombie outbreak?

StarNews — The Beast of Bladenboro: In 1954, a savage killer kept a small North Carolina town in a grip of terror.

What is the “Beast of Bladenboro”?

What is considered the most haunted place in Wilmington?

About 4 years ago I was out walking around 5 am. I always got my walking done early in the morning to avoid traffic and is much more peaceful time of day. I had walked about a half mile when I heard the most frightening sound I ever heard, it was at the edge of the woods, (whatever it was) scared the hell out of me!…made the hair on my neck stand up. It was a sound that’s extremely hard to describe, it was like a scream and a roar together. i’ll never forget it…I don’t walk that early in the morning no more. (needless to say)
