Q. What is New Hanover Couty Sheriff’s Office policy on making public concealed weapons permit holders’ information?
A. Information about concealed carry permit holders, including their names, addresses and dates of birth, are public record and can be obtained from the N.C. Department of Justice.
The state Justice Department acts as something of a repository for information concerning concealed carriers, but that may soon change. A bill introduced in the N.C. General Assembly seeks to make such information confidential, thus exempting it from public disclosure laws.
Recent mass shootings have stirred anew the divisive debate over gun control. The controversy led to The Journal News publishing in December a map showing the names and addresses of handgun permit holders in two New York counties it covers. The map ignited such a firestorm that Journal News staffers received threats, prompting the newspaper to hire armed security guards, according to The Associated Press.
