Q. How many accidents have occurred at or near the WAVE bus stop on Independence Boulevard by the mall in the past year?
A. Independence Boulevard certainly sees its share of traffic crashes. A review of the Wilmington Police Department’s 2012 crash reports found 10 wrecks that occurred near the WAVE bus stop in front of Independence Mall.
But the only crash definitely linked to the bus stop occurred on on Nov. 27, when a woman told police that she was headed north on Independence Boulevard behind a city bus. When the bus stopped, she attempted to go around it. As she merged into the other lane, she struck another vehicle.
Four other crash reports say only that one vehicle failed to reduce speed and rear-ended another, but make no mention of a city bus.
Three crashes that occurred near the bus stop seem to have involved issues with traffic at nearby intersections.
One wreck happened in the mall parking lot. Another was a hit and run where a truck making a U-turn knocked down six cement poles.
