One local hairstylist says to look for a Deva Curl certified salon. There are 13 in Wilmington listed at MyDevaCurl.com.

Hairlinz Design Group (4504 Fountain Drive) is one of them.

“With Deva Curl, their philosophy for curly hair is, ‘don’t fight it, just go with it,’ ” said Hairlinz owner Blair Krier. “Curly hair has to be cut dry, you have to be able to see where it lives and cut it where it lives.”

Krier invested in the two-day Deva Curl workshop required to become salon certified and carry the Deva product line since the majority of her clients, she says, battle with curly, frizzy hair.

“Most of them want it straightened, but now with this system, they are going with what they have and they love it,” she said.

Naturallycurly.com lists seven salons on their site that are curly hair friendly including, Great Clips in Carolina Beach.

Yelp.com (click here) and Angies List (membership required) have listings of overall top rated Wilmington salons.

Frizz buster tips:

• Use shampoos specifically designed for curly hair. Normal shampoos dehydrate curls and cause frizz.

• Don’t over highlight curly hair. Highlighting promotes frizz, says Krier.

• Use a finishing curl texturizer or sculpting gel to eliminate frizz. Most hair salons, beauty supply stores, and drug stores carry curly hair products.

I have curly, frizzy hair, and I currently use the Deva Curl products discussed in this response. My stylist is fantastic to work with: Kelly K. at Seagrass Salon!

Another salon I would recommend is Tanglez Salon on Oleander Dr., by Pizzetta’s. They have several master stylists on-site, including Barbara, Kathy, and Melissa, all of whom have extensive experience in all types of hair. Great salon, great stylists, great experience.

Jina Norwood of Della Testa Hair Design located off of Oleander Drive at 220 Avondale Ave, Suite 104, Wilmington, NC 28403, is the only person I would trust my curls to in Wilmington.

I thought my hair would always be a frizzy mess until I met Jina.

Deva Curl products and their method an absolute life saver for any person with curly hair. I highly recommend The Curly Girl Handbook for anybody looking for more information about what to do with your hair. Hannah at Seagrass Salon is amazing! I always leave with a beautiful curly haircut!

I highly recommend Curly Sexy Hair curling creme – it defines curls without crunch and really tames the frizz. I had tried all kinds of curly hair products but that’s the very best – can’t live without it. It’s expensive – regularly $16.95 each – but Ulta has a sale every so often – buy 2 get one free.
