Who is laying fiber cable down the west side of South College Road around 17th Street?

Amanda Lisk

The fiber is being placed by a company called “Level 3 Communications.” All necessary permits have been obtained from the city and NC DOT, said Dylan Lee, a spokesman for the city of Wilmington. The project involves the placement of fiber optic cable along South College Road, South 17th Street and Shipyard Boulevard. It is scheduled for completion Friday, Dec. 21.

Level 3 Communications is an international communications company headquartered in Broomfield, Colo., with a Wilmington office at 1642 S. College Rd. Level 3’s website states their company is one of six Tier 1 Internet providers in the world and ranked as one of the largest IP transit networks in North America and Europe.

“Level 3 is expanding its fiber presence in Wilmington to meet the growing demand for network services among its customers,” the company said in a statement. “The build, when completed, will allow Level 3 to provide a variety of services to higher education, municipal, government, and mid-to-large sized commercial organizations.”
