Consider donation before you dump the tapes.
Solid Waste Planner Lynn Bestul, environmental management for New Hanover County, said, “The preferred method to dispose of VHS tapes is to donate them to any of the local nonprofit organizations for reuse. Personal videos can be cleared using a magnet; and then, the tape can be recorded on again.”
And if you do not donate the VHS tapes, you may now recycle them locally.
Bestul said, “The New Hanover County Environmental Management Department recently received approval from the contractor that recycles our electronics to add VHS tapes to the electronics program.”
According to Bestul, the NHC Electronics recycling program accepts electronics 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday at the landfill, located at 5210 U.S. 421.
