Two major attractions in the Wilmington area are the historic river district and the beaches, and many enjoy both of these sites even during the colder months. However, as temperatures drop and people want to head indoors, many turn to places like the area’s various museums and historic homes.
According to Connie Nelson of the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau , the Cape Fear Museum, Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington Railroad Museum, Children’s Museum of Wilmington and tours of historic homes like the Bellamy Mansion, Burgwin-Wright House, and Latimer House are popular choices in the colder seasons.
Nevertheless, Nelson says the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Battleship North Carolina and Fort Fisher State Historic Site are top-visited attractions year-round.
The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located in Kure Beach, is open 362 days a year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The Battleship North Carolina is open every day of the year, including all holidays. With winter hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting Tuesday following Labor Day (September 4, 2012) through Thursday before Memorial Day (May 23, 2013). The exception is on Christmas Day when the ship opens at noon.
Thalian Hall and other performance venues also provide theatrical and musical performances that visitors can enjoy throughout the year.
