Were the pilings taken out when the Long Beach Pier was removed?

The Long Beach Pier was in the process of being demolished in Oak Island on April 26, 2006. StarNews file photo.

Q. When Long Beach Pier was removed, were the pilings also removed or were they cut off below the low water line. Wondering if anything left over could be a hazard for boaters or swimmers in the area.

A. The pilings were removed along with the pier, according to Kyle Thomas, a spokesman for Oak Island.
