Q. Why has the local CBS channel in Wilmington stopped airing the live lottery drawings? Noticed it a few times this week when the usual lottery drawings are shown they go to local weather forecast instead.

A. The answer to this question involves a lot of back and forth between WILM-TV, Wilmington’s local CBS affiliate, and the N.C. Education lottery.

WILM’s national account executive, Terri Pudney explained that the lottery chose not to re-new their contract with WILM and that is why the live lottery drawings are no longer aired.

We then asked executives from the N.C. Education Lottery why the contract was not renewed. This is their response:

“Consistent with other lottery draw station agreements, the NCEL’s six year agreement with WILM-TV ended in September of 2012. The NCEL issued a request for proposal for NCEL Drawing Shows Televising Services for the Wilmington market on July 12, 2012, with proposals due on or before August 16, 2012. No proposals were received.”

From there we took the question back to WILM-TV and asked why no proposal was submitted to the NCEL and WILM responded with “no comment.”

“Since no television station made a proposal to offer our drawings live in the Wilmington area, it is currently not possible for lottery players in the region to watch live drawings. We are looking at what options might be available so that live drawings can again be televised there,” said NCEL director of corporate communications, Van Denton.

Lottery players can, however watch taped drawings which are posted shortly after the live version, on the NCEL website. To watch the tapings, go to www.nc-educationlottery.org and click on “Watch the latest video drawings,” on the right under the N.C. Education Lottery logo.

Live drawings can be seen on the websites of other stations that carry the drawings live, including WRAL.com in Raleigh and WITN.com in Washington, N.C.

The afternoon Carolina Pick 3 and Carolina Pick 4 drawings are held at 3 p.m. and the evening drawings of Carolina Pick 3, Carolina Pick 4, and Carolina Cash 5 are held at 11:22 p.m. Mega Millions drawings are held at 11 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays and Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
