Why are some Wrightsville Beach parking spaces closed on the weekends?

JJ Knight

Q. Why are the parking spaces on one side of North Lumina Avenue at Wrighstville Beach closed down on the weekends, when they are needed most by visitors?

A. On weekends, when traffic is at a high on Wrightsville Beach, the town shuts down the parking spaces on North Lumina Avenue to create a safety lane, said Police Chief Daniel House. In the past, he explained, cars parking on both sides of North Lumina created congestion, limiting access for emergency vehicles. He said there were occasions when fire trucks had difficulty navigating the heavy traffic.

House said the ordinance closing the parking spots from Stone Street to Mallard Street used to be seasonal, but last year the town decided to enforce the weekend closures year round.

What is the reasoning behind the new stop sign at Wrightsville Beach?

Is the opening schedule for the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge year-round?
