Q. What happened to the downtown doorman Craig Shepard? He was the best and always kept the peace when law enforcement offiders couldn’t at 2 a.m. Downtown nightlife isn’t the same!

A. Craig Shepard, the 6-foot-7 doorman who worked at half a dozen downtown Wilmington bars over 10 years, has retired.

Now 45, he’s a grandfather. He says he’s mowing grass and planting flowers. He’s not looking for work right now, although he consistently receives job offers from bar owners.

He still offers an occasional interview when local news media have questions about downtown nightlife. For the most part, though, he’s enjoying his retirement.
