Q. Why has the police department bought a multi-engine inflatable boat that is docked at the Conlon pier? Who paid for it and at what cost?
A. Technically, the inflatable police boat is courtesy of the federal government.
The Wilmington Police Department won a $273,750 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to purchase the boat in 2011, said Malcolm Phelps, the department’s grant manager.
The boat is used to respond to police needs on the waterways and to protect homeland security assets along the Cape Fear River, Phelps said.
