Police Chief Kurt Bartley did some research and found that the crime rate in Carolina Beach is comparable to area beach communities.
The year-round population of Carolina Beach population is about 5,770, with an additional 2,000 full-time residents in Kure Beach, Bartley said.
The full-time population of Wrightsville Beach is about 2,500.
The crime rate is based on the population of each town, per 100,000 people, Bartley said in an email response to questions.
“Unfortunately, most of our crime occurs during the busy tourist season when our population of the beach is close to 30,000 to 40,000 people, each week,” he said. “And I am sure that this is probably the same for the other beach towns. So when you look at our crime stats, yes, we are on average with the other towns who see the influx of tourist populations.”
Bartley said the Carolina Beach Police Department is also looking at its stats to ensure that it is recording them correctly.
“The federal reporting system is different than how the state records offenses for the court systems,” Bartley said.
