Currently located at the north end of Wrightsville Beach, the mailbox is being maintained by individuals who reside at Dune Ridge, according to town manager, Bob Simpson. The box was removed during Hurricane Irene last year.
Irene washed away the steps and decking that previously surrounded the mailbox. After the storm, the box was relocated atop a dune but was moved in September at the request of the National Audubon Society.
According to Audubon, the dunes were to be left undisturbed. Firstly, because their formation protects the beach against erosion, and secondly, dunes are not as stable as they appear.
Fearing for beachgoers safety, Audubon and county officials approved a new location for the mailbox, still near the inlet and only slightly further north than its previous location.
