Q. How much money has the city of Wilmington made on traffic tickets on South College between Monkey Junction (Walmart Shopping Center) and Cape Fear Academy in the days since we were annexed?
A. No monies can be collected by the city until a conviction is obtained, said Dylan Lee, city of Wilmington spokesman.
He said that if a conviction is obtained, the city receives $5 per citation.
There were 221 tickets written by the Wilmington Police Dept. in the Monkey Junction area from Jan. 1 through June 30 of this year, Lee said.
Legislation passed by the General Assembly effectively nullified the attempted annexation of the Monkey Junction area by the city of Wilmington.
According to WPD spokeswoman Lucy Crockett, patrol responsibilities in the Monkey Junction area have gone “back to the county as of earlier this summer,” around July 1.
