How come Wilmington doesn’t have many palm tree-lined streets?

Q. How come Wilmington doesn’t have many palm tree-lined streets or more palms planted around town like Myrtle Beach and Charleston, S.C.?

A. Palm trees are not included on the approved planting lists for the streets of either the city of Wilmington or New Hanover County, said Al Hight, director of the New Hanover County Cooperative Extension.

“They will grow here and do reasonably well given adequate root areas, but they are not on the lists,” he said.
