Q. Does Figure Eight Island receive any tax money for beach renourishment? And what about the room occupancy tax collected from their rentals?

A. Lisa Wurtzbacher, Finance Director for New Hanover County , suggested that beach renurishment and the room occupancy tax are two separate issues.

In an e-mail interview with MyReporter, Wurtzbacher said, “to date the county has not re-nourished Figure Eight Island’s beach for them.”

However, state and federal statutes do regulate room occupancy taxes. She said that money collected from the unincorporated areas of the county are placed in a fund and spent accordingly.
