Do you need permission to trim vegetation that is blocking a paved bicycle path?

Q. Do you need city or property owner permission to trim vegetation that is blocking a paved bicycle path? The specific location in question is on Bicycle Route 1 along Park Avenue near Belgrave Circle, where the path is impassable.

A. John Fullerton, city zoning administrator, said either the city’s parks or public services department would trim the vegetation, depending on where it is on a bike path or trail in the city.

He recommended against members of the public taking it upon themselves to trim vegetation away from public paths.

“We would rather have it reported and turned in where the problem areas are,” he said.

If you see an obstructed bike path or other trail, call the city’s park maintenance division at (910) 341-7852.

As for that particular section along Park Avenue, Fullerton said he called it in to the appropriate department and that city crews should take care of it.
