Q. How do you appeal New Hanover property tax values and what documents are required for the hearing?
A. Each year taxpayers may appeal their tax values. Taxpayers have different appeal rights for real property, personal property, business personal property, motor vehicles, and unlisted property discovered by the tax office.
For real property, the appeal must be in writing and sent to the New Hanover County Tax Administration office. The deadline to file an appeal varies depending on when the Board of Equalization and Review meets and adjourns. Each year the Board of Equalization and Review will hold its first meeting no earlier than the first Monday in April and no later than the first Monday in May. The Board of Equalization and Review will typically adjourn on or before the third Monday following the first meeting. No new appeals can be accepted after the adjournment of the Board of Equalization and Review. For 2012, the Board of Equalization and Review adjourned on May 10. The Board of Equalization and Review will continue to meet to resolve any appeals that were timely filed.
The taxpayer would need to bring any information to the hearing that would accurately reflect that the Tax Office’s value is incorrect as of the current assessment date. It is important to remember that for real property the current assessment date, effective date of the revaluation, is Jan. 1, 2012. Any appraisals or sales information after that date would not be acceptable for the hearing.
