UPDATE: Since we answered this question, Navassa is rebuilding its police force. In August, the town had hired a second police officer.
EARLIER ANSWER. Navassa’s last active police officer resigned on July 9, according to Town Administrator Claudia Bray. A second police officer resigned earlier. Two police officers are out on disability leave, leaving no active police officers today, Bray said.
Since the July 9 resignation the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has been covering Navassa, including officers patrolling on bikes. Mayor Eulis Willis said the town is exploring the option of contracting with the Sheriff’s Office to provide police services permanently.
The Town Council was scheduled to vote July 19, 2012, on whether to pursue a contract with Brunswick County for police services. However, not enough council members attended the meeting to provide a quorum, and the meeting and the vote will be rescheduled.
