Why are motorcyclists allowed to do stunts in the old bus terminal parking lot?

Q. Why are motorcyclists allowed to use the old bus terminal parking lot for stunts and flying around the surrounding streets well above the speed limit?

A. It is not illegal for motorcycles to do stunts on private property like the old bus terminal as long as the property owner allows it and they block the entrances to other vehicles, said Sgt. Mike Donelson, the supervisor in charge of Wilmington Police Department’s Traffic Unit. On private property, laws that govern speed, helmets and doing stunts like wheelies don’t apply.

However, if the motorcycles are just using an empty parking lot and the public still has access to drive in there then vehicular traffic laws would apply and motorcycles are not allowed to break those, Donelson said.

And of course, motorcycles using public streets surrounding the old bus terminal are subject to traffic laws.

I think its great if they have a place to goof off. I’ve seen one too many idiots flying down MLK on one wheel goinh 90 mph. If they want to kill themselves in a parking lot, off the public streets my tax dollars pay for, they should.
